A unique project for non-contact measurement of the length of a hot slab was also implemented. Our specialists designed and installed a system for measuring slab length in the process flow. This takes place without stopping the technological process and gives the operator the possibility to react to the metal cutting process if the measured slab length differs from the set value. At the same time, the measurement accuracy is ±5 mm at a slab length of 10,000 mm. The equipment was installed in the transport and finishing department of the converter shop of the works. To create the system, a non-contact laser length and speed gauge, a laser barrier, water flow sensors and air flow sensors were used. In general, the set of sensors provides not only measurement of the slab length, but also monitoring of the operability of the measuring system itself. One of the specific features of this project is the execution of works within the production flow: agreeing the work schedule with the customer made it possible to perform installation works with minute-level accuracy.
